What is a polarimeter?

A polarimeter is a measuring instrument used to determine the angle of rotation resulting from the passage of polarized light through an optically active material.

How does a polarimeter work?

In this section, we will see how a polarimeter works:

  1. For an analyte to be able to convert polarized light, it makes sense to have a light source first. So we first emit normal light, usually with a sodium vapor lamp.
  2. Second, the light passes through the polarizer to transform it into polarized light.
  3. The polarized light then passes through a tube in which the active substance sample has been optically deposited. Thus, the light exits the tube at an angle different from the angle from which it entered.
  4. Finally, the polarimeter analyzes the angle of rotation of the light and provides the results.

Note that the angle of deflection of polarized light depends not only on the properties of the optically active material, but also on its concentration and the length of the polarizing tube.

Types of polarization

Basically, polarometers can be classified into four different types:

  • Manual polarimeter: the user must rotate the analyzer while looking through the polarimeter. It is mainly used in universities for teaching or in small laboratories.
  • Automatic polarimeter: Simply press a button and the polarimeter will return the measurement value. They tend to be more accurate than the evidence.
  • Picquartz Polarimeter: It has two built-in semicircular panels, one suitable for right-handed people and the other for left-handed people.
  • X-ray polarimeters: This type of polarimeter uses X-rays to make measurements.
